How Cadet Assessments Work

4–5 min read
Airline Pathways

Airline cadet programmes are highly competitive, with many applicants competing for a limited number of places. Most airlines use multi-stage assessment processes designed to evaluate not only academic ability, but also the core competencies required to become a professional pilot.

The Assessment Process

1
Online Aptitude Testing
Most cadet programmes begin with online aptitude tests assessing numerical reasoning, multitasking, memory, concentration, situational awareness and decision making. Common systems include PILAPT, COMPASS, CUT-E/AON and ADAPT. These tests are often timed and intentionally challenging.
2
Group Exercises
Candidates who progress are invited to assessment centres where group exercises assess teamwork and communication. Assessors look for candidates who communicate clearly, listen actively, involve quieter team members, stay calm under pressure and contribute ideas professionally.
3
Competency Interviews
Most airlines use competency-based interviews focused on behaviours and past experiences. Common topics include leadership, teamwork, problem solving, handling pressure, communication and motivation. Use the STAR method to structure your answers.
4
Simulator Assessments
Some cadet programmes include simulator exercises or hand-eye coordination testing. Assessors observe workload management, communication, situational awareness, decision making and coachability — not just flying precision.
5
Final Assessment Day
The final stages may combine interviews, aptitude testing, presentations, individual exercises and simulator tasks. Airlines are assessing whether you can operate safely and work effectively within a professional crew environment.
